Papers, ca. 1942-2001.

Contains excerpts from a book of memoirs written by Beebe detailing his military service. Discusses his civilian sentiments towards the war prior to his being drafted. Describes, at length, his training locations, duties, and experiences. Focuses on the hardship of being separated from his new wife of only one year. Also discusses his appointment, upon graduation from Officer Candidate School, to be an instructor at the same institution, and his gratitude in not being immediately sent overseas. Beebe was originally assigned to the Pacific theater as a part of the Japanese invasion force, but instead served only in occupational capacities, due to the war's end, in the Army's Quartermaster Corps. Memoir describes his duties and memories as manager of the field-grade officers' hotel in Kyoto, Japan, most notably a visit by both Generals MacArthur and Eisenhower. Also details his relations with other LDS servicemen throughout his service, his gratitude for the opportunity to attend church meetings, the strength derived from living according to his religious convictions, and the chance to attend the baptism of a fellow soldier who was taught and baptized by Boyd K. Packer. Discusses his love for the Japanese people and his ability to cooperate with and relate to them. Also includes two copies of a transcript of an interview conducted by Robert Freeman: the original and another copy edited by Beebe with additional insertions. Interview emphasizes Beebe's post-war life. Photographs within memoir show Beebe in military dress, with his wife, and with his father. Also includes photograph of Generals Eikleberger, Woodruff, and Eisenhower exiting the hotel he managed in Kyoto.
